Columbia Fire Department Lt. Bruce Britt is the 2014 American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter Firefighter Lifesaver Award recipient.
Britt, honored posthumously, is one of nine Lifesaver Award recipients to be honored during the Lifesaver Award event, which begins at 5 p.m. June 24 at Capital West Event Center, 1315 Fairgrounds Rd., in Jefferson City.
“It is an honor to bestow this award for the service Lt. Britt provided through the years,” said chapter Executive Director Dave Griffith.
Britt, a 23-year department veteran, suffered fatal injuries Feb. 22 while he was assisting residents at University Village. He became trapped after a section of a second-floor exterior walkway he was on collapsed.
Britt, along with other firefighters and emergency personnel, responded to the scene at 601 S. Providence Rd. in Columbia about 4:18 a.m. on Feb. 22 after receiving a 911 call from a resident.
According to information about the incident, Britt was on the second-floor walkway trying to communicate with a resident when the structure collapsed.
Responding and emergency officials freed him from the rubble and provided emergency medical services. He was transported by ambulance to University Hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
Britt, who was 48, is the first Columbia firefighter to die in the line of duty since Dec. 1, 1986.
His wife, Leigh, is scheduled to receive the award in his honor.
