4th Annual Event Honors Courageous Lifesaving Heroes

The American Red Cross of Greater St. Louis honored local heroes in 10 categories during the 4th annual Heroes Breakfast Thursday, March 26, at the Chase Park Plaza.

Nearly a dozen corporations served as primary sponsors of the event. AAA, Emerson, KSDK and Anheuser-Busch were Breakfast sponsors. Other major sponsors included AAA, American Direct, Ascension, BP North American, Drury Hotels, Edward Jones, Emerson, Ekon, US Bank and Veteran’s Home Care.

Kay Quinn of KSDK and Chief Dennis Jenkerson of the St. Louis Fire Department served as emcees for the event.

This year, the Red Cross is celebrated award winners in 10 categories, for acting courageously to help someone in critical need.

Here is a look at the categories and the respective winners:

Blood Services Award - St. Louis, MO

  • Honoree: Tanjila Bolden-Myers provides guidance for those suffering with Sickle Cell disease.
  • Disaster Relief Award - St. Louis, MO

  • Honoree: Lamont Moore selflessly ran to a burning building to save a woman and baby.
  • Firefighter Award - St. Louis, MO

  • Honoree: Firefighter John Whalen rescued a fellow firefighter in a burning building.
  • Good Samaritan Adult Award Pevely, MO

  • Honoree: Michael Lozen didn’t mind his own business when he stopped along a highway to help a driver in need.
  • Good Samaritan Youth Award - St. Louis County, MO

  • Honoree: Jason Landwehr recognized the universal sign for choking and performed an abdominal thrust on a friend at lunch.
  • Healthcare Professional Award - St. Louis County, MO

  • Honoree: Laurel Miller was on vacation at the Grand Canyon when a complete stranger had a heart attack.
  • Law Enforcement Award - Bella Villa, MO

  • Honoree: Police Officer Gerald Abernathy used his first aid/CPR training to save a man having a heart attack on the way to the hospital.
  • Emergency Medical Assistance - Mt. Vernon, IL

  • Honoree: Bruce Clarry,Greg Kueker, Brad Ghast, Brandon Koester and Glenn Eberhart used their AED training to save the life of their crew leader.
  • Military Award - Scott AFB, IL

  • Honoree: Staff Sergeant Andrew Drysdale was called upon to secure and military-grade munitions at a civilian location to save the lives of others.
  • Community Impact - St. Louis, MO

  • Honoree: Orlando Stowers awakens early in the morning to gather food to feed dozens of people at the food pantry at the Riverview Church of God.
