Red Cross Shelter Opens BEFORE the Disaster

Most people know the Red Cross responds to disasters. -But every once in a while we get to step in and prevent a disaster…

Late Thursday night, a shelter was requested for the Buckeye Recreation Center on Beech Mountain. Road conditions deteriorated quickly and it became unsafe to travel. People were stranded on top of the mountain and local motels filled up fast. Seven people were left with “no room in the inn”.

Just last month, a team of local residents trained on opening and managing a shelter. (We hope they turn into Red Cross volunteers!) They got to practice their new skills as they quickly helped open one at the recreation center. The on-site sofas and chairs served as beds for the night. In the morning, biscuits were brought in from Fred’s General Store.

As soon as the roads were clear, everyone was able to get back to their travels. It may not have been their most comfortable night’s sleep- but at least no one was left out in the cold or had a wreck trying to make it down the mountain!
