The American Red Cross relies heavily on the American public and community partners to carry out its humanitarian mission. In honor of Red Cross Month, employees at Discovery Benefits decided to help those displaced by disaster.
During a month-long campaign, employees held a fundraiser for comfort kit items. Every Friday was 'Sweatshirt Friday', where employees would donate money to wear a sweatshirt for the day. All proceeds went to items for disaster victims. The company matched 50% of what was accumulated by the employees and nearly $1,000 was raised as a result.
Employees of the company then worked with Walgreens to purchase items for comfort kits which included soap, shampoo, wash cloths, razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other items those affected by disaster might need when displaced.
'We greatly appreciate the efforts of partners like Discovery Benefits and the way their employees were engaged throughout this process was neat to see," said Red Cross Dakotas Region CEO, Judy Green.
Finally, the employees spent an afternoon assembling the kits in the office and loading them into a Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle.
"We are proud of how our employees came together to learn about the Red Cross and the impact we can make to assist those in need," said Jessica Shawn, Discovery Benefits Human Resources Generalist. "To have them work together on this project really opened their eyes."
The comfort kits assembled will now be brought to disaster scenes and provide individuals and families with what they need after getting displaced.
