This is our way of saying thanks to the troops

Board of Directors Sends Holiday Cheer to Troops

The holidays can be a busy time with shopping, travel and family gatherings. It’s heartwarming to see how people also find time to give with meaning and turn to the Red Cross to help make the holidays special for others. Many in New Jersey pulled together recently to bring some holiday cheer to the men and women who serve our country.

The American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey Board of Directors coordinated an Adopt A Unit collection of items for the troops and invited family members, co-workers and other groups to get involved. The collection included personal care items, playing cards and puzzles, and an array of comfort foods like granola bars, pretzels, cocoa and candies.

On December 5, Verizon New Jersey President Paul Sullivan, who also serves as Board Chair with the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey, brought together more than 90 volunteers at Verizon’s Livingston office to help prepare the collections for shipment. Board members, Verizon employees and their family members sorted items, filled boxes with supplies and treats, sealed and labeled packages; while children wrote holiday greetings and drew pictures for the troops.

Each of the 100 packages was topped off with bundles of holiday greetings from the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. The campaign invites community members to send cards of thanks, encouragement and holiday cheer to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and our veterans in New Jersey. The cards are then assembled into festive holiday bundles by volunteers and Red Cross Club members prior to shipment and distribution.
