American Red Cross Provides Thanksgiving to Sandy Survivors in NJ

Pleasantville, NJ, November 25, 2013 – As Sandy survivors across New Jersey continue to recover, more than a year after the storm devastated the area, the American Red Cross, in partnership with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, will be providing Thanksgiving turkeys for at least 1,500 people in affected areas.

“By working with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, we can bring Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of familes in need,” said Nancy Orlando, regional CEO, American Red Cross South Jersey Region. “Last year at this time Red Cross volunteers worked throughout the holiday weekend to make sure residents didn’t go hungry. A year later, the Red Cross continues to support Sandy survivors throughout New Jersey.”

The Red Cross is providing the Community FoodBank of New Jersey $5,000 for holiday meals in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. The funds will be shared by Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southern Branch in Egg Harbor Township, the Middlesex Long Term Recovery Group, the Salvation Army in Perth Amboy and the Center for Food Action in Englewood.

“The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is grateful to our friends at the American Red Cross for the generous donation that will help struggling families enjoy a holiday meal,” said Cathy McCann, Chief Operating Officer, Community FoodBank of New Jersey. “While much progress has been made since last Thanksgiving in the wake of Sandy’s devastation, we know many people are still facing daily hardships, and this gift will ease a burden at this special time of year.”

The Red Cross also provided the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties with $5,000 for holiday meals in the Sandy impacted communities of Brick, Manahawkin, Toms River, Keansburg, Highlands and Union Beach. In total, the Red Cross will fund $10,000 that will help provide more than 2,700 Thanksgiving meals to Sandy survivors across the state of New Jersey.

Thanks to the generosity of the American public, the Red Cross has been helping people since before Sandy made land fall and in the first year, has spent or made commitments to spend more than 90 percent of the money donated to Sandy. However, the needs from Sandy are still great and the Red Cross will continue to be there for New Jersey families as they rebuild and recover.
