American Red Cross volunteers and community partners provided a happy holiday to 548 children from 195 families through the annual Wayne County Holiday Hero Toy Drive that was hosted by the Wayne County Branch of the American Red Cross Dec. 17-18 in Newark.
Toys were made available for Wayne County children ages six months to 17 years, and Red Cross volunteers distributed more than 2,000 toys and 100 Christmas dinners during the two-day drive.
Linda Werts, a member of the Red Cross’ Wayne County Branch Board of Directors, is the chair of the board’s Community Service Committee and coordinated the toy drive with fellow board member Carole Nary. Here’s what Linda had to say about this year’s successful drive:
“We couldn’t have organized it and carried it off so smoothly without all of the help, advice and prep work from Jim Love, Betsy Americo and experienced volunteers like Pat Love, Sallie Fisher, Laurie McFaul-Frey, Dave Christler, Bill Boyd, James Davis, Doug Doebler, Bill Doebler and many others. So thank you all for helping us with this year’s event!
“And a special ‘thank you’ to all of you who volunteered in one way or another to ensure that less fortunate children in Wayne County experienced the joy of the Christmas season. Children received two toys (or a toy and one clothing item), plus a stuffed animal. Additionally, this year Christmas meals were distributed to just under 100 families on a first-come, first-serve basis. Twenty-six churches, businesses, or agencies partnered with us this year. We were again recipients of a grant from the Hubertus and Helmi Behrla Endowment Fund, and for the first time received a donation from the Pirate Toy Fund.”
