At a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. this week, former Massachusetts region CEO Jarrett T. Barrios was awarded the American Red Cross Presidential Award for Excellence.

The award was giving citing his "leadership and transformation of the Massachusetts region."

In the two years Barrios was with the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, the region grew its International Services and Service to Armed Forces programs, increased its disaster, development and communications staff, and merged the two sides of Massachusetts into one region.

The Red Cross was tested during Barrios' tenure with large-scale disaseters -- not only did Massachusetts volunteers respond to Superstorm Sandy and Blizzard Nemo, but responded to -- and are still actively engaged in -- the Boston Marathon Bombing recovery effort.
