The American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program dates back to the establishment of the Red Cross by Clara Barton over 130 years ago. Here in the Greater New York Region—New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, and Greenwich, Conn. – we continue to build on that legacy.
From serving as the emergency communications link to deployed military, and working with troops stationed at West Point, to supporting Veteran’s Affairs organizations, our dedicated SAF staff and volunteers provide critical services year-round, 24/7. In the past 12 months alone, the Region has provided community support and services to more than 4,500 service members and over 3,000 military family members.
“We should all be proud of every Red Crosser who helps to support our military members and their families who give so selflessly of themselves in times of war and peace,” said Josh Lockwood, Greater New York Region CEO.
From May 21 to 31, 2014, SAF volunteers across the region supported service members at various venues as part of this year’s Memorial Day and Fleet Week celebrations.
Here are the events Red Cross SAF volunteers supported:
Fleet Week in New York City – The SAF team partnered with the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, hosting a table at the Intrepid Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25. Volunteers distributed information on SAF and Red Cross services to hundreds of members of the armed forces, as well as to approximately 900 passersby. The general public was also invited to express their thanks to service members on Red Cross “Thank you For Serving” postcards. About 1,000 cards signed that day will be delivered to service members and veterans in our community.
Calverton National Cemetery Memorial Day Event – Four Long Island volunteers supported the Memorial Day Mass Care Event at the flag raising ceremony in Calverton, N.Y., on May 24.
Northport VA Stand Down – SAF volunteers provided information on SAF services and handed out more than 250 hygiene kits to veterans at the annual Stand Down event at the Northport, Long Island, Veteran’s Administration on May 28.
“During Deployment” Yellow Ribbon Event – Four volunteers provided information on SAF services to approximately 20 family members of currently deployed service members May 31 at a tabling event in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Greenwich Town Party – As part of Memorial Day weekend celebrations, Greenwich, Conn., residents congregated at the Town Party, where Red Crossers recruited new volunteers, updated residents about the Red Cross Blood Services program and even tested residents in their preparedness skills.
