Red Cross Assists Seven After Penn Yan Apartment Fire

Looking Back at 2014 and Giving Thanks
Red Cross volunteers will remain available to all affected tenants for support, counseling and referrals.

Three Disaster Action Team volunteers from the American Red Cross Finger Lakes Chapter provided assistance Tuesday to seven people from three families who were displaced from their homes by an apartment fire on Liberty Street in Penn Yan.

The volunteers provided the tenants with comfort kits that contain personal hygiene items, and financial assistance for food, clothing and lodging for up to three nights at an area hotel. Red Cross volunteers will remain available to all affected tenants for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.

American Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers are trained to respond to disasters such as fires, floods and ice storms and administer to the needs of survivors. Red Cross assistance typically includes temporary shelter, financial assistance for food and replacement clothing, replacement medication, and emotional counseling and support. Volunteers are needed and anyone interested in becoming a DAT member should contact the American Red Cross Finger Lakes Chapter at (607) 936-3766 or redcross.org/ny/corning/volunteer.
