More than 20,000 Prudential employees and their families and friends participated in the company’s 19th Global Volunteer Day Oct. 5 by donating their time and talent to projects at community service organizations serving people all over the world.
In Central New York, about 30 Prudential employees and their family members chose to volunteer for the American Red Cross. They spent the day at the American Red Cross of Cayuga County office in Auburn painting, making other office improvements, and assembling comfort kits that are distributed to residents following local disasters such as a house fire. Comfort kits include toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and other items.
“We are honored that Prudential is committed to our mission of alleviating human suffering and chose the Red Cross for its Global Volunteer Day project,” said Pamela Baker Gratton, Manager of the American Red Cross of Cayuga County.
Global Volunteer Day projects that meet certain criteria are eligible to receive $1,000 Challenge Grants for the non-profit organizations. Since its inception in 1996, the Global Volunteer Day Challenge Grant Program has provided more than $2.6 million to community organizations.
The American Red Cross meets the criteria and will receive a $1,000 Challenge Grant for its disaster relief services, Baker Gratton said.
When Prudential introduced Global Volunteer Day in 1995 to celebrate and encourage volunteerism, more than 5,000 employees and their families and friends worked on 100 volunteer projects in the United States and Japan. Last year, more than 28,000 people around the world participated in 750 Global Volunteer Day projects in the United States and 10 other countries.
“Prudential employees’ dedication to helping their neighbors is demonstrated by the many things they do year-round,” said Lata Reddy, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Prudential and President of The Prudential Foundation. “Global Volunteer Day provides employees the opportunity to continue to make a positive impact in communities around the globe on the same day.”
Projects conducted on Prudential Global Volunteer Day include beautifying local parks, cleaning up school playgrounds, building homes, preparing food for the needy, mentoring children, and many other activities.
