Following the tornado and severe storms that hit Central New York on July 8, the Syracuse Crunch hockey team held an online jersey auction to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
The auction featuring the road blue jerseys of Crunch players Eric Neilson, Jon DiSalvatore and Mark Barberio raised $1,195, which the Crunch presented Aug. 6 to American Red Cross Central New York Region CEO Rosie Taravella at the War Memorial Arena in Syracuse.
“Donations like these help us to train our volunteers, keep our supplies on hand, keep our vehicles moving and really provide that direct assistance that our clients need,” Rosie said.
The National Weather Service estimated the tornado, which touched down in Smithfield, Madison County, to be an EF-2 with winds over 100 miles per hour. Four people were killed during the storm.
Eric Neilson was in Syracuse and presented the check personally to Rosie. Eric was the winner of the 2013-14 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award presented to the American Hockey League player who best exemplifies the spirit of community service.
“I like to think Syracuse is my home away from home and if it hits here, it hits close to my heart and my home,” Eric said. “So we’ll do any little thing that we can as a team or myself to help raise money.”
