Red Cross of CNY Assists 18 After Three Fires in 12 Hours

Fire Safety
It is important families and individuals remain vigilant in practicing home fire safety.

Disaster Action Team volunteers from the American Red Cross of Central New York provided assistance and support to 18 people from five families who were displaced from their homes by fires from Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning in Oswego, Onondaga and Cayuga counties.

In Oswego County, Red Cross volunteers provided financial assistance for food, clothing, seasonal garments and local transportation to a family of nine (three adults, six children) that was displaced by a fire early Wednesday morning on Hogback Road in Orwell. The Red Cross also provided the family with comfort kids that include personal hygiene items.

In Onondaga County, Red Cross volunteers provided financial assistance for food, clothing, seasonal garments, local transportation and lodging at an area hotel for eight people (five adults, three children) from two families who were displaced by a fire Tuesday night on Kramer Drive in Syracuse.

In Cayuga County, Red Cross volunteers provided financial assistance for food, clothing and shoes to one adult who was displaced by a fire late Tuesday afternoon on State Route 38 in Moravia.

The Red Cross volunteers will remain available to the families for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.

TWO LIFESAVING STEPS As the bitter temperatures continue this week and home heating devices are in heavy use, it is important families and individuals remain vigilant in practicing home fire safety. The Red Cross is asking every resident to take two simple steps that can save lives: check your existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
