The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc., recently approved a $10,000 grant for the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley for emergency services provided by the Red Cross to residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties following the June floods.

The floods destroyed or damaged more than 1,100 homes and impacted more than 2,400 families. Here’s how the Red Cross responded in the days and weeks following the floods:

• Red Cross shelters provided housing for 338 people.

• Red Cross volunteers served 13,671 hot meals and 19,717 snacks.

• Red Cross volunteers distributed 20,761 bulk items, 2,423 clean-up kits and 566 comfort kits.

• Red Cross volunteers provided physical health services to 649 people and mental health counseling to 1,212 people.

“This was a costly relief operation, and The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties’ generous contribution will help offset the cost of the relief efforts for the residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties whose lives were turned upside down by the floods,” said Rosie Taravella, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Central New York Region. “The Red Cross response continues today as we’re working with residents from Herkimer and Oneida counties to assist their long-term recovery.”
