"I think that if you are fortunate, you should share it." --John Byler

It was the many disasters responded to by the American Red Cross Serving Central PA and his own personal experience with a fire in his home two years ago that led Lancaster County Businessman John Byler of Manheim Township, Lancaster County, to support the American Red Cross with a contribution of $50,000, hoping to use his gift to encourage others to give as well.

"The Lord has been good to me, and I think we should help other people out," said Byler of Byler Management Associates, owner of Penn Cinema, Lititz, several golf courses and numerous apartment buildings. "The fire in my home was devastating and losing personal stuff was hard. I did have great insurance which allowed me to quickly recover, but most people do not."

Byler added that all the disasters and fires lately made him want to donate where it would do the most good. He chose the American Red Cross. He is inviting others to do the same. "I think that if you are fortunate, you should share it."

Byler, who described himself as semi-retired, has always led Byler Associates to support community organizations and has held public awareness events at Penn Cinemas. Describing himself as semi-retired, Byler has turned over the reins of the business to his son Jonathan, who continues the organization’s philanthropic outlook.
