Local Red Cross Supports "Totes of Hope" Campaign

We’re looking forward to holding this program annually with the goal of reaching all homeless vets.

Many of our military veterans return home to tremendous and insurmountable difficulties. They struggle to find a job in our weakened economy. They are overwhelmed by post-traumatic stress disorder. Too many end up homeless and alone.

These men and women are heroes, and they deserve our care and consideration. Sadly, homeless veterans have difficulty accessing information and services that exist to help them get back on their feet. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Red Cross is proud to partner with local veterans groups to distribute comfort kits. The kits will contain personal hygiene items as well as information about essential support programs offered by local agencies.

“Homeless vets often have trouble accessing resources and accepting help. By going to them and delivering basic comfort items and referrals to partner agencies, we have the opportunity to help them in a setting that’s more comfortable to them,” says American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Service to the Armed Forces specialist, Ryan McGoldrick. “We would love to get them into stable, long-term programs but at the very least, we can bring them the tools they need to get there and the knowledge that we thank and support them.”

Starting now through November 8th, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross hopes to assemble 200 “Totes of Hope” to benefit homeless veterans. Red Cross staff and volunteers will collect personal comfort and hygiene items and package them in tote bags. These “Totes of Hope” will be given to homeless veterans around Veterans Day.

“We’re looking forward to holding this program annually with the goal of reaching all homeless veterans in Southeastern PA,” McGoldrick says.
