The Palmetto SC Region has responded to more than 1,450 disasters this year assisting more than 4,600 adults and children. The Red Cross has helped people affected by flooding, storms and tornados, but the majority of disasters have been home fires.
We are now in our peak season for home fires. Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Red Cross responded to 24 home fires and an eight-unit apartment fire assisting 86 people in our region including 26 children.
Fires happen quickly, devastating lives and property. For the family, it is a life-changing tragedy. Whether a family loses its home in the middle of the day or in the middle of the night, the Red Cross is there. The Red Cross is the only human service organization called to the fire scene by the fire department.
Red Cross assists the family with basic emergency disaster needs such as temporary shelter, financial assistance for meals and clothes, acquiring replacement medications, and access to health services and mental health counseling. But we don't stop there. We also help with their long term needs through collaboration with our community partners.
In this peak season of home fires, Red Cross needs the help of its volunteers and financial supporters. It takes an average $1,250 for Red Cross to support a family of four impacted by fire. Anyone interested in supporting the Palmetto SC Region for fire victims is encouraged to contact one of our seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
