Red Cross Volunteers Ensure Emergency Needs are Met
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE… (Brattleboro, Vermont –August 16, 2013) Fire struck a two story apartment building on Baker Street in Brattleboro, VT, last night, displacing three residents. Red Cross volunteers quickly responded, working with the displaced to ensure their emergency needs were met. The Red Cross disaster services volunteers, trained in client case work, arranged for temporary lodging for the elderly couple who occupied the second floor and provided financial assistance to help with food and clothing. Outreach to the first floor tenant is being undertaken this morning to ensure his needs have been met.
The Disaster Action Team members who responded to last night’s fire on behalf of the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross are part of one of twelve such teams around the state. The Disaster Action Teams are the front line response for Red Cross disaster services. If fire, flood or other natural or man-made disaster strikes, these trained volunteers can: meet with the displaced to ensure temporary lodging; open a shelter if needed; connect those impacted with disaster health and mental health services; support first responders with food and hydration; as well as provide referrals for additional resources to aid in the recovery process.
All emergency assistance provided by the Red Cross is provided without charge. To fund this assistance, and to support the training and tools required to respond, the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross relies upon donations made by members of the community.
