Response is 68th in 2014; close to 200 displaced have received services
and 1,000 first responders have been supported
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ... (Milton, VT – March 12, 2014) As the people of our region gear up for a significant winter storm, emergency crews in Milton have already had a busy day. Milton fire and crews from three additional departments responded this morning to a fire on Hobbs Road. A single family home was severely damaged, displacing the sole resident.
Two volunteers with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team out of Chittenden County were called to the scene after a request was received for support of the first responders and the potential need for client assistance. After speaking with the impacted resident, financial assistance was provided for food and clothing. The resident had other arrangements for temporary lodging.
Today’s response makes for the sixty-eighth (68th) since the start of 2014, which has resulted in 190 people impacted by these fires across our region receiving Red Cross assistance of some kind. Traditionally, the helping hand extended is to ensure that those displaced have temporary lodging and can replace food and clothing lost to the blaze. In addition, referrals can be made to ensure that the devastated residents are aware of other resources that are available to help them start their recovery. Red Cross volunteers have also supported over 1,000 first responders during these first two and a half months of the year, providing them with food and beverage as they work the sceneof an emergency.
The immediate assistance provided by Red Cross volunteers today, and at each house and apartment fire to which they respond, gives the impacted residents time and a bit of breathing room to figure out their next steps. The Red Cross knows that the recovery process begins the moment disaster strikes.
