Displaced and first responders receive Red Cross support
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE… (Strafford, VT and Rutland, VT – January 8, 2014) Red Cross volunteers are providing support in response to two late day fires. A request received within the past hour to the on-call Red Cross Duty Officer advising of a house fire at 328 Old City Falls Road, Strafford, VT, indicated that two people would be in need of Red Cross support this evening. Volunteers are on their way to see what emergency needs, from temporary lodging to support for food and clothing, may be needed by the affected residents.
A few hours earlier, members of another Red Cross Disaster Action Team in our region answered the call for support at the scene of a commercial fire at East Creek Motors on West Street in Rutland, VT. The volunteers have provided water, hot beverages and food to first responders working to extinguish the blaze.
Today’s request for Red Cross assistance are the eleventh and twelfth of the new year. Last year, the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross was called upon in the wake of disaster 179 times; more frequently than anyone can recall in recent years. Ninety percent of those calls were related to house and apartment fires. Just more than half way through its current fiscal year, the organization is matching last year’s historic rate, which was 70% greater than seen in this region just four years ago.
