Food Assistance

  • Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)

    The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is responsible for providing nutrition assistance for disaster-affected areas requiring a Federal response. In the aftermath of a major disaster or emergency, FNS coordinates with federal, state, local and voluntary organizations to determine potential nutrition assistance needs of disaster victims.

  • Disaster Food Stamp Program

    Program for assistance with purchasing food. Must also apply with state and/or local social service agency. The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), an agency within the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), oversees the program which is carried out by state and/or local social service agencies to provide disaster food stamps to eligible households.

  • WIC Hurricane Katrina Disaster Response

    Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The FNS administers the WIC Program at the Federal level; state agencies are responsible for determining participant eligibility and providing benefits and services, and for authorizing vendors. To apply to be a WIC participant, you will need to contact your state or local agency to set up an appointment.

  • Contact place of employment

    If they have not done so, Hurricane Katrina survivors should contact their place of employment to let them know their current location and status. Many larger organizations have arranged a toll free number (listed on the corporate site) for displaced employees to call.

  • U.S. Department of Labor

    Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available to unemployed individuals beginning after the date the major disaster began and for up to 26 weeks after the major disaster was declared by the President, as long as their unemployment continues to be a result of the major disaster. Before an individual can be determined eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance, it must be established that the individual is not eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits (under any state or federal law). The program is administered by states as agents of the federal government.

  • Mortgages & Mortgage Companies

    Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and its members advise survivors to contact their mortgage company directly as soon as possible. Your mortgage banker should be able to tell you about special offers, such as extended grace periods, postponing any foreclosure action, e xtending your due date and waiving late fees, long-term solutions and assistance in contacting flood and hazard insurance companies. Mortgage bankers will re-evaluate their policies periodically; stay aware of changing terms. Most lenders have toll-free phone numbers for consumers to call.
