American Red Cross Response to Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas Floods

Overview

Tuesday, July 10, 2007—Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for much of central and northern Texas and eastern Oklahoma, which could add as much as half an inch or possibly an inch of rainfall to waterlogged areas of the two states. The long-range forecast is more favorable, which should allow most residents who evacuated to return to their homes by the weekend.

American Red Cross Response

American Red Cross disaster relief workers from across the United States are joining their colleagues in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas to help shelter displaced residents and provide food and emergency assistance. As the weather permits, teams of relief workers will conduct disaster assessments and determine how the Red Cross can best help meet the needs of the thousands of flood victims.

The Red Cross will continue to respond with food, shelter and cleaning supplies and by meeting other basic emergency needs resulting from the devastation caused by these floods. Those needing to contact loved ones are urged to use the Red Cross "Safe and Well" Website.

Finding Missing Loved Ones

Before disaster strikes, take time to create a family communications plan and complete an emergency contact card for all family members. Planning ahead is the best way to stay connected when disaster strikes. However, if you are separated from or cannot locate loved ones in the aftermath of a disaster, the Safe and Well List Web site also can be used as a resource when normal communications are disrupted.

About Donations of Goods or Collected Items

Unsolicited, spontaneous donations of goods and services from individuals and community groups, though well intentioned, have hidden costs and pose a number of complications for relief efforts. For these reasons, the Red Cross is not able to accept any large collections of items, such as used clothing, hygiene items, furniture, toys, and canned goods. Nor are we able to accept small, individual donations of these items.

If you represent a company wishing to offer supplies in bulk, please contact your local Red Cross chapter.
