Aloha for Heroes

On Sunday, November 15, the Hawaii Red Cross along with sponsors Windward Mall and JN Automotive, will be holding its first ‘Aloha for Heroes’ event- a fundraiser to support the American Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces and Veterans.

The event will take place at the Windward Mall Center Court from 10:00am to 4:00pm, where the public show their support of our Armed Forces by writing a card of gratitude to our local service members and veterans. For every card that is written, Windward Mall and JN Automotive will donate $1 to the Hawaii Red Cross.

There will also be custom motorcycle displays from Cycle City and attendees are invited to participate in a motorcycle competition. Registration to enter this contest is $25 per bike on the day of the event and all proceeds go to the Hawaii Red Cross.

The 111th Army Band (Hawaii National Guard) will be doing special performances throughout the day and there will also be a photo booth and an arts and crafts table for the kids!

Our longstanding relationship with the military started during the civil war when Red Cross founder Clara Barton risked her life to help wounded soldiers and became known as the angel of the battlefield.

Today, we do a lot for the military here at home, across the country, and around the world.

We provide 24/7 emergency communication between military service members and their families during times of crisis; give pre-deployment briefings to thousands of Hawaii based military service members; offer Reconnection Workshops to help families cope with those returning from deployment; and online Learning Hubs for veterans.

We have offices at 4 military bases and provide 35,000 hours of volunteer service which is equivalent to 18 full time employees. We run the entire volunteer program at Tripler Army Medical Center. Our volunteers do everything from work in the pharmacy to distributing flowers and magazines and teaching yoga and art therapy. We even have 25 volunteer therapy dogs that bring unconditional comfort and joy to patients and staff at Tripler.

Also, from now until November 20th, 16 of our Oahu Red Cross clubs and 1 Red Cross Club on the Big Island are collecting toiletries for Veterans at their schools. These toiletry drives will benefit veterans at the Tripler Army Medical Center, the Spark M. Matsunaga VA Medical Center, the Fisher House Hawaii, as well as homeless veterans.

Donation canisters will also be placed at the following Windward Mall establishments from November 1 to November 30: Windward Mall Management Office, Big City Diner, Starbucks, Gyu-Kaku and Ruby Tuesday.

If you cannot make it down there, you can also show your support by donating online at or by calling us or mailing us a check. Mahalo for your support!
