Hy-Vee is proud to be the title sponsor of the yearly meeting between the University of Nebraska and University of Iowa football teams – a Big Ten Conference rivalry that has been dubbed “The Heroes Game.” This annual rivalry benefits the American Red Cross, an organization doing “incredible good” in the heartland.
The “Heroes Game,” scheduled for the Friday after Thanksgiving, pits conference powerhouses Nebraska and Iowa in what promises to become an epic battle for bragging rights in the nation’s heartland. The two teams will be playing for more than a trophy, however; with the help of Hy-Vee, they will use the national stage created by the game to recognize individuals for acts of heroism in their communities.
In advance of the game, fans of each school are encouraged to nominate everyday citizens of Nebraska and Iowa who deserve to be honored for extraordinary acts of heroism. One citizen-hero from each state will be invited to attend the game as a special guest of the teams, receive on-field recognition, and have his or her name inscribed on the game trophy.
A hero must be at least 18 years of age and live, work or go to school in either Iowa or Nebraska; however, the act of heroism or good deed need not have occurred in either state. One person from both Iowa and Nebraska will be selected to represent each state at the Hy-Vee Heroes Game on Friday, November 25th in Iowa City, IA, receive tickets to the Iowa vs. Nebraska NCAA football game and have their name and hometown inscribed on the Heroes Game trophy.
Heroism need not involve the direct saving of a life. If nominating for a heroic event, the event must have occurred between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2016. For other categories, the service should be ongoing and/or exemplary. Judging is done by the Heroes Selection Committee (“Selection Committee”) made up of Iowa and Nebraska business and community leaders, including Red Cross supporters. In order to be eligible for the nomination, heroes must live, work or go to school in either Iowa or Nebraska. All non-winning entries for the Hy-Vee Heroes Game will be re-submitted for consideration in the Iowa and Nebraska American Red Cross Annual Heroes Event to be held in 2016.
Nominations will be taken from October 1 - 24, 2016 and will close by midnight on October 24, 2016. Hero nominations not selected for the Heroes Game will be considered for recognition at one of the Annual American Red Cross Heroes events in selected Nebraska and Iowa cities and towns in 2016.
Nominations may be filled out online or mailed to the Red Cross offices in Omaha or Des Moines by midnight on October 24, 2016:
