2017 Ride for the Red - Steel Towns Trail Ride
Registration and Start: 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Join this one-day cycling trip along the Great Allegheny Passage Trail between West Newton and Pittsburgh’s South Side.
The Steel Towns Trail Ride on the Great Allegheny Passage Trail route will allow riders to enjoy the trail along the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, from West Newton through the historic steel towns of Boston, McKeesport, Duquesne, Homestead, The Waterfront and Pittsburgh’s Southside.
The trail, recently completed to Pittsburgh, has a packed, crushed limestone surface for a smooth ride. Built mainly on abandoned rail beds, the trail is nearly level with the average grade of less than one percent. The ride between West Newton and Pittsburgh follows the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers and travels through many historic local and reclaimed “Steel City” areas. Along the ride you will enjoy the rivers, historic industrial sights, parks, bike-only river bridges and other interesting cycling sights to make the day enjoyable and interesting while supporting the mission of American Red Cross.
Volunteers will host hydration stations located along the trail at approximately five-mile intervals. The end points of West Newton and Pittsburgh Southside provide excellent parking and activities to enjoy during your half-point break or after the completion of the ride.
You can ride for as much or as little as you choose - one mile, 10 miles or up to 32 miles one-way and 64 miles round-trip between West Newton Trailhead and Pittsburgh’s South Side Works. Upon completion, riders will return to their starting locations at their own pace.
Choose your starting location: West Newton Trail Head or Pittsburgh’s South Side Works.
Riders are encouraged to raise $200 and more in support of the American Red Cross, in addition to the initial registration fee.
