Pinedale Disaster Training Academy

Red Cross Wyoming Disaster Training Academy

The American Red Cross is seeking Wyoming volunteers to respond to home fires and other disasters, run shelters, provide public information and tell the Red Cross story. Volunteers are encouraged to apply now so that they can participate in a special Disaster Academy on September 13 and 14 in Pinedale, WY, where they will receive all the training they need to start helping their local communities as part of the Red Cross team.

Red Cross Disaster Academy Details:

- Classes will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on September 13 and 14 and will follow three different tracks:

  • Disaster Action Team (DAT) – respond to the scene of everyday disasters and directly help people affected by home fires and other emergencies.
  • Sheltering – Help set up and run shelters to provide a safe, friendly place for people evacuated from wildfires, floods and other large incidents.
  • Public Affairs – Skilled, experienced communicators are needed to help provide vital public information during disasters; share preparedness tips and information before, during and after disasters; and tell the Red Cross story via photos, videos and articles.
  • - No prior experience is needed for the DAT and sheltering tracks – just compassion and the commitment to serve your community as a Red Cross volunteer! Prior public affairs, communications, photography, marketing or journalism experience is required for the Public Affairs track.

    - Prior to the training academy, participants have an opportunity to participate in a real shelter exercise to set up a staff shelter for Academy attendees and instructors. The Shelter Exercise will begin at 3 p.m., Friday, September 12. Any volunteers who would like hands-on experience and credit for the Shelter Exercise course can participate in the shelter opening.

    - The training is free, and lunch is provided for Academy attendees.
