TAKE A BITE OUT OF MALARIA—ACTIVITIES
At the Red Cross and in your community…
• Hold a fundraiser or competition to raise money and awareness about malaria
• Hang-up and handout flyers at your chapter, schools, community centers and faith-based organizations;
• Display a bed net in your chapter or other highly visible place with information on the campaign;
• Hand out promotional flyer at chapter sponsored events
• “Neighbors Teaching Neighbors”—Educate your friends and neighbors about the threat of malaria and how they can get involved.
In your school…
• “Lunch and Learn” - Rotate lunch tables and teach classmates about malaria and how to prevent it
• “Decorate a Mosquito”- Sell paper mosquitoes and paper bed nets to your classmates or club members (sell mosquitoes for $1 and bed nets for $10);
• Create a competition between teams, clubs or classes to post more bed nets than mosquitoes;
• “Battle of the Bands” - Battle of the bands or talent show with prizes for the winners. Market your contest on the internet and in local papers and newsletters.
At work …
• Create opportunities for presentation or speaking engagements i.e., schools, potential donors, local business
• Distribute flyers and fact sheets to partners, colleagues, and philanthropic organizations;
• Serve African food and play African music, show the malaria videos and educate your attendees on the cost of malaria.
At home …
• Host a bed net party with your friends and donate the proceeds to your Red Cross chapter
• Brownbag lunch at work – Invite your colleagues to bring their lunch to a presentation and show the video. Promote the event with flyers and create a competition between departments to raise awareness and support.
Online …
• Write a blog on malaria awareness
• Post malaria photos on My Space, Facebook or YouTube
• Post a Web banner on your chapter or personal website
