- 7/19/07 — Creating a Foundation for the Future
Following a long, curved stretch of red clay road leading into the village of Faizal Nagar, Kinniya, in the Trincomalee district of eastern Sri Lanka, stands a row of homes in varying states of completion. Some need doors and windows; others need walls and a roof. Yet, inside of each house are smiling, determined faces of families working under the hot sun to finish their homes.

- 12/27/2006 — Red Cross responds to emerging needs of tsunami survivors
Two years after a tsunami devastated the Sri Lankan coastline and forced thousands of people to resettle inland, many families have settled into new homes. This includes families who have moved to a brand new community in Walahanduwa near the southern city of Galle. While the people in this community are thankful for their new homes, conditions around the homes have deteriorated to the point that residents face a renewed threat of illness and disease.

- 12/21/2006 — Tsunami Two Years Later: American Red Cross Continues to Support Critical Needs of Survivors
Two years after the raging waters of the tsunami swept away lives, homes and
communities in more than a dozen countries, daily routines are slowly coming
back for those impacted by this disaster. However, for many people struggles
persist. It is widely acknowledged that the greatest needs are for housing and
livelihoods. In response, humanitarian agencies, including the American Red
Cross, are collaborating to restore and rebuild houses and to provide new
economic opportunities in affected communities. At the same time, the American
Red Cross is working to ensure that critical emerging needs of survivors are
being met.

- 12/5/2006 — American Red Cross Provides US $10 Million to Boost Tsunami Housing in Sri Lanka
Today, the American Red Cross announced that it will make a contribution of US $10 million to support housing reconstruction in Sri Lanka through an owner-driven housing program. The contribution will assist more than 3,000 tsunami-affected families in repairing or rebuilding their homes.

At a time when people are typically celebrating the start of a brand new year, the people of southern Asia and eastern Africa will begin the year 2005 recovering from tragedy and disaster. But even with this bleak picture, an international humanitarian effort has formed, providing hope to disaster victims who now know help is on the way. Today, the American Red Cross announced it is sending an initial $30 million in aid to the affected areas.
