Born and raised in Morton Grove, Ill., Marlee Matlin lost her hearing when she was 18 months old.
Acting since age 7, Marlee received worldwide critical acclaim for her motion picture debut in Children of a Lesser God, a performance the film community recognized in 1987 with its highest honor - the Academy Award for Best Actress. At age 21, she became the youngest recipient of the Best Actress Oscar and one of only four actresses to receive that honor for a film debut. In addition to the Oscar, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored Marlee with the 1986 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama.
Since that time, Marlee has appeared in a dozen more films, as well as starring and guest-starring in a number of Emmy nominated performances, including Spin City, Seinfeld, ER, Judging Amy, The Practice and The West Wing.
In addition to acting, Marlee has been busy with a number of other pursuits. She has served as Executive Producer for films airing on television such as Lifetime: Television for Women, The Disney Channel and Showtime. In addition, she is author of the Simon and Schuster’s children’s novel, Deaf Child Crossing, and is currently serving as the national spokesperson for closed captioning.
Marlee also devotes her time to the American Red Cross as well as those charities which benefit children such as The Children Affected by AIDS Foundation. As a member of The American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, she helps the organization highlight important initiatives and promotes awareness of a variety of Red Cross lines of service.
"I am thrilled to volunteer for the American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet. As a previous member of the board that oversees Americorps, I've seen first hand the amazing difference that volunteers can make. I'm eager to continue to do everything I can to help the American Red Cross and encourage the American public to support the Red Cross by giving time, blood and money so that they can carry out their lifesaving mission." -- Marlee Matlin
