The American Red Cross Greater New York Region welcomed Josh Lockwood as its new regional Chief Executive Officer this week. Lockwood had been the executive director of Habitat for Humanity – New York City.
In his new position, Lockwood will oversee Red Cross services in New York City, Long Island, much of the Lower Hudson Valley, and Greenwich, Conn. With more than 13 million residents in the region, and averaging nearly 3,000 local disasters each year, it is the busiest region in the Red Cross.
“The mission of the American Red Cross is extraordinarily compelling,” said Lockwood. “I think most people see the work we do across the country—and when needed, around the world. The Red Cross is about more than responding to tornadoes or collecting blood. Every day, the Greater New York Red Cross is helping dozens of people affected by fires, eight or more a day. It helps wounded warriors recover in hospitals at places like West Point. I look forward to working with our volunteers and employees to make a true difference in the lives of those we serve.”
The board of trustees for the Greater NY Region expects great things from Lockwood.
“The search committee was made up of many active volunteers and while we had a number of great candidates before us, it was very clear to us that Josh understands New York and the challenges nonprofits face,” said Peter Rapaport, board chair. “He definitely is someone who isn’t afraid to roll his sleeves up to get the job done.
During Lockwood’s six-year tenure at Habitat‐NYC, the nonprofit was recognized by the New York Times Non‐Profit Excellence Awards, the US Green Building Council, Avenue Magazine, the New York State Association for Affordable Housing, and Affordable Housing Finance Magazine. Lockwood was also named by Crain’s New York as one of its “40 Under 40” rising stars in 2010.
“I loved my last position; however, I am very excited to take on the challenge of leading the nation’s largest Red Cross region,” said Lockwood. “In only a few short days, I have been inspired and impressed by the team that is in place and I look forward to a bright future at the American Red Cross.”
Prior to joining Habitat‐NYC, Lockwood was a Principal at the management and real estate consulting firm of HR&A Advisors. He has received a Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a Master’s Degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.
