More Monterey Bay Volunteers Deployed

The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter sent two more volunteers to the Gulf region as Hurricane Isaac hits Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, preparing for what could be a large disaster response spanning multiple states.

Red Cross disaster workers are responding throughout the region, opening evacuation shelters and providing relief supplies for those affected by Isaac in several states along the Gulf.

Two Monterey Bay Area volunteers, from Carmel Valley and Salinas, left Tuesday for Houston, TX and are expected to help with relief efforts in Louisiana.

The Monterey Bay Area Chapter also deployed one volunteer last week with a total of 61 volunteers from the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast sent to the Gulf Coast in the last four days.

The Red Cross has deployed almost 2,400 disaster workers across the Gulf Coast and pre-positioned or moved 290,000 ready-to-eat meals in affected communities. Overall, the Red Cross has opened 52 shelters in five states and activated more than 190 emergency response vehicles ready to help.

“Isaac is expected to cause severe flooding in the Gulf Coast region, so right now, the Red Cross is doing everything we can to help impacted families weather the storm,” said Charley Shimanski Senior Vice President for Disaster Services for the American Red Cross.
