NEW ORLEANS, LA, June 6, 2013 — The New Orleans Fire Department will “Shake the Boot” this weekend to support the relief services of the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter. As part of the campaign, firefighters carry their large fire boots and ask passing motorists to fill them with donations.
New Orleans firefighters in uniform will be shaking their boots for three days this Friday (June 7) through Sunday (June 9) at busy intersections around New Orleans.
Twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week Red Cross volunteers are on call to help families affected by disasters. By filling the boot with monetary donations, the community can help provide shelter, clothing, food, medicines and much-needed comfort as individuals and families begin the road to recovery.
Firefighters will collect donations at the following intersections:
• Howard Ave. and Carondelet St.
• Canal St. and Rampart St.
• Elysian Fields and North Miro St.
• Elysian Fields and St. Claude St.
• Read Blvd. and I-10
• Bullard Ave. and I-10
• Louisa St. and Old Gentilly Rd.
• Carrollton Ave. and Canal St.
• Harrison Ave. and Canal Blvd.
• Napoleon Ave. and St. Charles Ave.
• Gen. DeGaulle and Shirley Dr.
New Orleans firefighters in 2012 collected more than $13,000 to support American Red Cross disaster relief.
"The Red Cross responds to a disaster almost every day in our community. Whether it is a home fire, tornado, or hurricane, lives are impacted, homes are destroyed and people in need of help turn to the Red Cross," said Kay W. Wilkins, American Red Cross South Louisiana Region, CEO. “The New Orleans Fire Department's ‘Shake the Boot’ program helps keep Red Cross services operating in our community.”
All disaster services provided by the American Red Cross are made available free of charge and are funded through the support of community members. Dedicated Red Cross disaster volunteers ensure that neighbors are there to help neighbors during times of great need.
