(Bethlehem, PA) July 21, 2013 – On Saturday, July 20th, the American Red Cross SAF Program held a Deployment Readiness and Preparedness Training for children of military families. The event was held at the Navy Reserve Center in Allentown, PA. Approximately 20 children, ages 6 to 18 participated. Jennifer Pierce, Service to the Armed Forces and International Services Director said, “We are providing children of military families with tools and skills necessary to assist them with the transition of their deployed family member to another country.”
The curriculum included Preparedness Training and Cultural Training. Younger children were then provided with a class on astronomy – specifically, constellations and staying connected with the family member by observing the stars. Older children created a secret code and a wallet in order to exchange messages with the deployed parent. Operation Military Kids provided supplies for the event.
