Red Cross Announces Monterey Bay Area 2013 Heroes

MONTEREY, CA (April 25, 2013) - The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter is looking forward to the upcoming 2013 Heroes Dinner on May 18, 2013 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Monterey.

Members of the Heroes Committee are proud to announce this year’s winners of the Hero Awards, which recognizes members of the community who have shown courage, dedication, and character through acts of heroism and kindness:

Animal Rescue Hero

  • Amanda Mouisset, SPCA Pet Behavior Specialist in Salinas, performed a dramatic cliff rescue in Lucia to a dog who was found about 15 feet down a steep cliff on Highway 1. She helped return the dog to solid ground and after he had been treated by a SPCA veterinarian, the team was able to find a loving family in Pacific Grove who adopted the dog.
  • Good Samaritan Hero

  • Chris Axton of Marina has made it his mission in life to teach his coworkers, friends, and family members lifesaving techniques such as the abdominal thrust because as a server he has had to use this technique three times in order to save a patron who was choking.
  • Law Enforcement Heroes

  • Christopher Balaoro, Justin Heckman, Kevin Mead, and Alejandro Zamora of Salinas took immediate action when they found out that a family’s vehicle had veered off road on San Juan Grade Road. They were able to save a mother and her two children from being trapped in the car wreckage, which was approximately 400 feet down a steep embankment.
  • Philanthropic Hero

  • Pacific Gas & Electric Company has been a leading corporate citizen and natural partner for the American Red Cross. They have underwritten the Be Red Cross Ready preparedness curriculum and are involved in an array of activities including assembling disaster preparedness kits and serving on the Chapter Board of Directors.
