WASHINGTON, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 — The American Red Cross today announced that Cherae Bishop has been named senior vice president, Government Relations, and will lead Red Cross government relations efforts effective October 15.
"Cherae Bishop has more than 15 years experience working in government relations on behalf of both nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and I'm delighted that she will be leading the Red Cross efforts in working with government officials and partners at the federal, state and local levels," said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross.
Bishop joined the Red Cross in 2008 as senior director of Legislative Affairs, and was promoted last year as the new vice president of Legislative Affairs and Public Policy. She assisted in securing federal appropriations for the Red Cross during the 2008 disaster season and has a strong understanding of Congress, the members and their districts and opportunities to partner with Red Cross. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Bishop also has led the ongoing engagement of the Red Cross with the Haitian Diaspora Community and members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
“I am looking forward to this next phase of my professional life with an amazing organization such as the American Red Cross where collectively our advocacy efforts on the federal, state and international level continues positively impact the lives of so many people,” Bishop said.
Prior to joining the Red Cross, Bishop provided legislative and strategic counsel to Volunteers of America, Inc. as the nonprofit’s vice president of Legislative Affairs and Public Policy. She previously held key positions for several trade associations and businesses.¬
A native of Hamden, Conn., Bishop received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., and her Juris Doctor degree from the American University Washington College of Law.
