SAN JOSE, CA (May 24, 2013) – The American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter is sending three volunteers to Oklahoma, as more than 600 people in two states sought refuge from a tragic tornado at shelters Thursday night.
Already this week, more than 200 Red Cross disaster workers have opened shelters, kitchens and emergency aid stations to help people affected by the tragic storm.
Leaving yesterday and today to help with the relief effort are local residents: Therese Becker, Diane St. Denis and Stephanie Wilde from San Jose.
The Silicon Valley Chapter has deployed four volunteers since the storm hit earlier this week.
The Red Cross has deployed more than 200 disaster workers nationally to Oklahoma, sheltering hundreds as we lead in to the Memorial Day weekend. Overall, more than 30 emergency response vehicles have been activated and ready to help. Red Cross workers have handed out more than 5,000 relief items including comfort kits, coolers, buckets, gloves, dust masks, trash bags, flashlights, tarps, shovels, rakes and blankets.
“The Red Cross is on the ground in Oklahoma helping people begin the recovery process after this tragic storm,” said Trevor Riggen, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the Red Cross. “We're expanding our relief efforts as more workers, equipment and supplies arrive. Over the next few days, Red Cross volunteers will also work with many of the affected families to meet emergency needs and connect them with recovery resources.”
