SANTA CRUZ, CA (May 1, 2012) – Volunteers from the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter were providing emergency assistance Monday evening to residents displaced by a two-alarm fire at the Stag Hotel in Watsonville.
An evacuation center was initially set up at the Marinovich Community Center at 120 Second Street for residents. Local volunteers from Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties provided food and hydration for displaced residents and emergency responders as well as temporary shelter for 28 displaced residents at a motel overnight.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are being provided by Red Cross partners for Tuesday as well as Wednesday, and Red Cross client caseworkers are working with County Public and Mental Health to find permanent housing for clients and to replace medications and medical equipment. Volunteers from the Santa Cruz County Chapter will continue to work with residents to assist with their long-term recovery.
