The Bob Collins Golf Classic Returns to the Greens

The Bob Collins Golf Classic returns to the greens on Tuesday, October 11, at the Grand Bear Golf Course in Saucier, Miss. Registration for the Golf Classic, a four-player scramble tournament to benefit the American Red Cross of Southeast Mississippi, begins at 8 a.m. Individuals and teams are welcome to play; registration is $100 per player or $400 per team.

Sponsored by the Grand Bear and Harrah’s Gulf Coast, the tournament is named in honor of Bob Collins, a former local Red Cross chapter director who was instrumental in creating a legacy-tournament many years ago. After Collins retired from Red Cross, the tournament retired as well. The tourney was resurrected in 2012 by the Chapter's board of directors and named in Collins' honor.

Tournament Glory Days (1985-2004)

Collins and a team of dedicated volunteers began the Red Cross Golf Tournament on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1985. The tournament grew annually for more than a decade. Within its first three years, it became known as one of the top charity tournaments on the coast with numerous sponsors who helped ensure a no-cost to low-cost event.

“Almost everything was donated,” Collins says with a smile. “The tournament grew so successful that national headquarters recognized it as one of the agency’s best practices.”

Held from 1985 to 2004 at the Broadwater Golf Course on Beach Boulevard in Biloxi, the tournament always had a full field of players and even a flight for ladies.
