SAN DIEGO, October 5, 2010 – Hundreds of people from the San Diego and Imperial Counties communities joined the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter at the eighth annual Real Heroes Breakfast to honor the recipients of the 2010 Real Heroes Awards. Tremendous support from businesses and individuals helped the local Red Cross raise over $175,000 to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters.
Keynote Speaker Major Chris Fields of the Oklahoma City Fire Department presented a moving speech touching on his experiences with the horrendous 1995 bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Major Fields spoke on the role of community in the midst of a disaster, and the difference between those who stand and watch, and those who help in an emergency. The event was an inspiring celebration, which served as a reminder of the importance of courage, compassion and community.
Over 700 community and business leaders attended the uplifting breakfast where they witnessed as ten inspiring individuals and groups were awarded Real Heroes Awards in the following categories: Adult, Animal, Company, Fire and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Media, Medical, Military, Youth and the Wendell Cutting Humanitarian Award.
Proceeds from the 2010 Real Heroes Breakfast went towards the San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter of the Red Cross to ensure the continuation of vital community services and programs. The American Red Cross provides disaster response services, assisting those affected by emergencies in our local community. The Red Cross responds to a local disaster once every 24 hours providing nutrition, hydration, shelter, comfort and more. In addition to disaster services, the Red Cross offers much needed training in Preparedness and Health and Safety for all members of the community. The Red Cross also offers support services such as emergency communication and emergency financial assistance to our service members through the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Program.
