Volunteers Honored at 2012 Red Cross Hill Country Holiday Open House

KERRVILLE, TX – December 19, 2012. The Hill Country Chapter Holiday Open House held on December 13th was very well attended with over 100 local volunteers and friends. In addition to great food and people, the chapter recognized two exceptional volunteers. Both of these individuals were unable to attend the October 6th Annual Volunteer Recognition and were surprised with the presentations!

Audrey Mayer from Fredericksburg received her 25 years of service pin! She has been teaching health and safety classes, such as first aid, CPR and Babysitting, first as a school teacher in Houston and most recently within her church and the Gillespie Country community. Thousands of elementary children in Texas and local residents have received lifesaving information and skills because of her dedication and expertise. Audrey also helps with Health Fairs and is an active member of the Disaster Action Team.

The chapter presented the Volunteer of the Year “Dale” Award to Alan Cone for his amazing service within all areas of the American Red Cross. He is an active Disaster Action Team member who responds to home fires and helps manage shelter operations. This past year, he also worked within the Service to the Armed Forces program, making follow-up calls to insure that sons and daughters get home for critical family emergencies. Lastly, he is a First Aid, CPR/AED and Water Safety Instructor – teaching children to swim at the Center for Fitness in Kerrville and conducting classes throughout the Hill Country for the general public and local businesses. Along with this award, Alan was presented with his 50 Years of Service Pin. He began his career with the Red Cross as a Water Safety Instructor at Tulane University and has given thousands of students the ability to save themselves by teaching them to swim.

Members of the Hill Country Chorale were present to provide entertainment during the event – sharing a great selection of Christmas Carols. Thanks to all the volunteers for attending and especially to Roy Ayala, Kellie Early, Suzanne Eller, Terry Faglie, Wally & Carolyn Freeman, David & Mona LeBleu, Kathleen Marshall, Patti Morin and Maureen Poorman for helping with the food. We also thank Peter Beenan at The Main and H-E-B for their contributions to the menu.
