Welcoming New Bay Area Board Members

July 12, 2012 (San Francisco, CA) – Three new board members and two new youth board members were welcomed at the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter Board of Director’s annual meeting on Thursday, June 14at the Union Square Marriott in San Francisco. These dedicated community leaders will strengthen the Bay Area Chapter with their commitment to volunteerism, service delivery and civic engagement.

Mark Alexander, PhD is a retired research scientist at the Division of Research Kaiser Permanente Northern California. He is also a Cardiovascular Epidemiologist who is committed to improving the health outcomes of marginalized communities. Alexander is also interested in the effects of racism and social class on health. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of the Bay Area. He is an advisor to many community organizations in theSan Francisco Bay Area.

Marie Andel is a Chief Administrative Officer for the California State Auto Group, a major provider of AAA branded insurance in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Andel is a champion of the company’s award-winning volunteer program and played a key role in establishing a regional diversity council there.

Jonathan Velline is Executive Vice President for ATM Banking and Store Strategy at Wells Fargo. In this role, Velline manages the third largest bank ATM network in the United States. Under his leadership Wells Fargo became the first financial institution in the U.S. with web-enabled and talking ATMs

Roger Hancock was elected for a three-year term as Contra Costa County Chair. Hancock is the manager of Community Affairs for the AAA Insurance Exchange and has spent his career championing the efforts of volunteers. As a corporate volunteer program manager, Hancock directed AAA and Bank of America to win the Points of Light Foundation’s “Award for Excellence in Workplace Volunteer Programs.” As a volunteer, he is on California’s Volunteer Service Commission and was President of the Volunteer Centers of California.

Youth Board Members:

Madeline Lee is a senior at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School in San Francisco. Lee is the Community Events Chair for the Youth Executive Board where she encourages other Red Cross club members to get more involved with the community.

Brandon Yan is a junior at Aragon High School in San Mateo where he is President of the Red Cross Club. Yan is organizing a Fun Run/Bike for San Mateo County and has worked on the “Map Your Block” project, to learn more about his neighborhood for disaster preparedness.
