Welcoming Youth Board Members

August 13, 2012 (SAN JOSE, CA) – Two new youth board members, Sai Yerraguntla and Thomas O’Brien, were elected onto the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter’s Board of Directors for the 2012-2013 fiscal year on July 13, 2012 in San Jose. Both of these young leaders are committed to volunteerism, service delivery and civic engagement for their local chapter.

Sai Yerraguntla is a senior at Monte Vista High School. She has been a Red Cross volunteer throughout high school and is currently the President of her Red Cross Club. She has hosted and participated in events relating to International Social Services, Health and Safety and Disaster Services and has been exposed to activities in Blood Services and Services to the Armed Forces. Sai is also a Basics Aid Training Instructor for elementary school students. Last year, Sai was the Administrative Services Coordinator of the Youth Executive Board where her responsibilities included organizing board updates and recording meeting minutes. She also planned a number of social gatherings for all high school Red Cross clubs in Silicon Valley.

Thomas O’Brien is a senior at Bellarmine College Preparatory and is currently the President of his Red Cross Club. He has been a Red Cross volunteer for the past three years, where he has focused on teaching Basic Aid Training (BAT) classes to elementary school students. Thomas is extremely dedicated to BAT classes throughout the academic year because the amount of money fundraised by these classes was crucial to support other programs within the Youth Department. As a youth board member, Thomas hopes to recruit and retain more youth volunteers to the Red Cross while making them aware of all the amazing opportunities there are through the five lines of service. Thomas is also a certified CPR/First Aid instructor for the Red Cross.

Sai and Thomas have been selected to the Executive Board due to their excellent volunteering efforts over the years and the amount of dedication they had put in as members of the Youth Executive Board. In the future, they both hope to implement their volunteer and service skills in the medical field as doctors.
