Local American Red Cross Announces New Chief Development Officer

SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2015 — The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties today announced that Wendy McKinney has been named regional chief development officer of the organization.

“By adding Wendy to our team we’re adding another integral piece to continue fulfilling our lifesaving mission in the community,” said Bill Earley, regional CEO for the Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties. “Her energy, passion and true non-profit spirit are second-to-none.”In her new role, McKinney works with external partners, corporations, individual donors, volunteers and others to advance the Red Cross mission in the community by raising funds to support disaster preparedness initiatives, emergency relief efforts, services to members of the armed forces and their families, and more.

A native of Los Angeles, McKinney brings over 20 years of marketing, sales and fundraising experience in the financial services industry and more than 10 years of experience in the non-profit industry. Most recently, McKinney successfully created and led the fundraising division of one of San Diego’s oldest and largest non-profits, the Neighborhood House Association (NHA).  As development director, McKinney led NHA’s 100 Year Centennial Celebration, which raised over $1 million for the organization.

Prior to joining NHA, McKinney worked in the financial services sector for companies including Morgan Stanley Smith Barney (MSSB), VARDS (a division of Wachovia Bank) and AIG/SunAmerica. She was responsible for building the most successful sales team in AIG/SunAmerica’s history, reaching a $5 billion sales goal, as well as maintaining a multi-million dollar sponsorship budget.

McKinney is involved with numerous local organizations, including the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, CEO Roundtable, San Diego Economic Development Corporation and the 1898 Society at the Red Cross. She is also a former Jackie Robinson YMCA board member and former Urban League committee member.

A graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, she also holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Michigan, Executive Leadership Institute and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.  McKinney is married to a local pastor in San Diego and has three children.
