Local American Red Cross Appoints New Disaster Program Manager

The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter today announced that Jose Ortega has been appointed disaster program manager of the Imperial Valley Service Center.

As disaster program manager, Ortega will act as a facilitative leader across all aspects of the disaster lifecycle: Prepare, Response and Recovery. He will ensure Red Cross services continue to be available to diverse communities and work closely with volunteers and officials from the region to encourage preparedness, carry out response and recovery plans strengthen resiliency in the face of disaster.

“Jose brings nearly four years of experience as a Red Cross volunteer focusing on disaster response,” said Sylvia E. Preciado-Platero, manager of the American Red Cross Imperial Valley Service Center. “We’re thrilled to have him on board as staff to lead local efforts in strengthening our region’s ability to care for those impacted and displaced by human emergencies and disasters.”

In January 2010, Ortega joined the Red Cross as volunteer Disaster Program Lead driving the efforts to train volunteers in sheltering, feeding, logistics, and casework procedures. He represented the Red Cross at meetings to improve client care and initiated programs to help those needs. Ortega also coordinated with law enforcement, fire department and privately owned agencies to connect clients to programs and services while reducing issues such as homelessness during disasters. Previously he also worked as a health and safety instructor for Red Cross.
