SANTA CRUZ, CA (October 21, 2013) – On Friday, September 27, leading members of the Santa Cruz County philanthropic community gathered at the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for the third annual “Celebrate the Red 2013”. They honored Mary and the late Richard “Dick” Solari and raised awareness of the vital role that the American Red Cross plays in the local community while enjoying a champagne reception, buffet dinner and participating in a silent auction.
Mary and the late Richard “Dick” Solari were presented with the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter 2013 Humanitarians of the Year award. The Solari family has created an impressive and long-lasting philanthropic tradition, including the funding of several major projects such as the Computer Technology Center at Cabrillo College in Aptos and the Mary and Richard Solari Cancer Center at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.
The program was emceed by Rick Martinez, Board Chair of the Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter. Guest speakers who presented the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Humanitarian of the Year award to Mary and the late Richard “Dick” Solari included Jim Roberts, CEO and President of Granite Construction, Nanette Mickiewicz, M.D., President of Dominican Hospital, Melinda Silverstein, Executive Director of Cabrillo College Foundation, and Lance Linares, CEO of Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.
Rod Caborn, First Class Fundraising and President of Sunrise Rotary of Santa Cruz, was the program’s auctioneer who helped motivate more than 185 attendees to donate more than $35,000 to help support disaster preparedness and relief efforts locally. Guests also had the opportunity to bid on several gift packages including a Behind the Scenes Boardwalk Tour for 15 people, Bay Area Flight to coast over San Francisco to San Jose, and dinner hosted and prepared for by Capitola’s City Councilmember, Mike Termini and 2nd District Supervisor, Zach Friend.
