ALBANY, NY (April 8, 2015) – The American Red Cross Eastern New York Region is pleased to announce a $30,000 grant from State Farm to support local disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts. The grant is being used over the course of the 2015 calendar year to strengthen Red Cross disaster services across a 24-county service area in upstate New York.
“We are truly grateful to State Farm, not only for their generous support, but for their commitment to emergency preparedness and disaster relief in our region,” said Gary Striar, CEO, American Red Cross Eastern New York Region. “With this grant, we will be able to continue building resiliency in the communities we serve so that we can respond more effectively and help people recover more quickly whenever disaster strikes.”
The Red Cross responds to more than 500 disasters in the Eastern New York Region each year – primarily home fires. In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, 925 families across the region turned to the Red Cross for food, shelter, comfort and hope in the face of disasters big and small. In the same time period, nearly 22,000 people prepared for emergencies as participants in free Red Cross courses and programs. All Red Cross disaster assistance is made available free of charge, thanks to the generosity of community partners and generous donors like State Farm.
“The State Farm mission is to help people recover from the unexpected, a mission right in line with the American Red Cross,” said Naomi Johnson, New York Community Specialist, State Farm. “State Farm has a long history of helping to ensure the Red Cross has the resources to proactively assist with disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.”
