The American Red Cross of Central Florida announced today that Raymond James Financial, Inc. has donated $100,000 for the relief efforts in Houston and Austin, Texas. In addition, Raymond James has set up an online site to encourage Raymond James associates, clients and the public to easily donate; over $2,000 has already been raised to date.
Texas has been under the gun of a powerful storm system since early May, suffering repeated and ongoing severe weather and torrential rains. The situation worsened over Memorial Day weekend as more flooding hit the state, including parts of major cities such as Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Wichita Falls. A State of Emergency has been declared for dozens of counties.
Even though the rain has finally stopped in Texas, flooding is still a danger as rivers continue to rise. Officials estimate about 8,000 homes are affected. Thousands have lost everything and the Red Cross is with them, providing food, relief supplies and comfort.
“The operations here and in Oklahoma are our largest and most complex since Hurricane Sandy, “ notes Richard Reed, Red Cross Senior Vice President of Disaster Cycle Services. “It’s not just the size that makes it complicated, but the drawn-out nature of the event. So far it’s affected nearly every part of this large state, including both urban and rural areas.”
Donations such as the generous Raymond James contribution help to cover costs of providing food, shelter, blankets, cots, emotional support, health services, initial casework and relief supplies. These contributions also cover some of the less visible costs that make relief possible including logistics, staff and technology expenses. The Red Cross estimates that it will spend more than $5 million (as of May 29) helping people hit by the severe weather in Texas. However, it’s important to note that Red Cross costs could be significantly higher. Additional flooding could cause more destruction which would impact the scale of the services and total costs.
The Red Cross has had more than 2,200 workers in Texas providing shelter, meals, relief items, health services and emotional comfort. Forty-five Red Cross emergency response vehicles are traveling through the impacted communities, distributing food, water and more than 62,000 relief supplies. Red Cross mobile kitchens are preparing meals and workers have served more than 73,000 meals and snacks. Red Cross workers are also providing health services such as replacing lost eyeglasses and medications and providing emotional support to those affected.
