Red Cross Names SanDisk’s Sanjay Mehrotra as Philanthropic CEO of the Year

(SAN JOSE, CA – September 28, 2015) – The American Red Cross of the Silicon Valley announced that it has selected Sanjay Mehrotra, co-founder, president, and chief executive officer of global flash storage leader SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), as the organization’s ‘2015 American Red Cross of the Silicon Valley Philanthropic CEO of the Year’. The annual American Red Cross award recognizes a CEO who has made a significant contribution as a leader and advocate of philanthropy in the Silicon Valley community.  Mr. Mehrotra will officially accept the honor at the 2015 Red Cross Innovation Celebration, which takes place on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at Club Auto Sport in San Jose, and benefits the American Red Cross emergency preparedness, response and recovery program and services.

“We are proud to recognize the significant contributions made by SanDisk under the guidance of Sanjay Mehrotra in our community and around the world with this special award," said Quinn Tran, Chapter CEO, American Red Cross of the Silicon Valley. “Due to Sanjay's innovative leadership, SanDisk has made a remarkable impact towards fulfilling our mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering locally, nationally and internationally."

“Over the last 27 years, SanDisk has continued to pioneer and drive flash memory storage innovations that have truly transformed the digital world. While I am enormously proud of these achievements, I am equally proud that we have made them while balancing a deep commitment to our community,” said Mr. Mehrotra. “I am honored to receive this award on behalf of SanDisk from the American Red Cross, an immensely vital organization which has made a difference in so many lives. As I pause to reflect on this recognition, I do so with the knowledge that there is much, much more work to be done.”

Under Mr. Mehrotra’s leadership, the spirit of giving through charitable contributions and employee volunteerism has become a cornerstone of SanDisk’s culture around the world. Since 2003, the SanDisk Foundation has awarded more than $33 million to more than 1,400 organizations worldwide.

As a “Signature Partner” of SanDisk, the company has long collaborated with the American Red Cross to spotlight volunteer engagement opportunities and provide ongoing financial support designated for Red Cross programs and services in Silicon Valley and across the United States.

SanDisk’s support in Silicon Valley and the local community through grant making and employee matching programs also includes over 100 other organizations locally including Stop Hunger Now, Second Harvest Food Bank in Santa Clara, Family Giving Tree, Habitat for Humanity, Citizen Schools/US2020, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and others.

In 2013, SanDisk launched its 25th Anniversary Celebration through Service, a year-long volunteerism campaign in which Mr. Mehrotra set the goal of community engagement participation by all of its employees. SanDisk employees fully embraced this challenge and SanDisk volunteer participation rate grew from 14 percent to 92 percent in one year.  Motivated by the program success, Mr. Mehrotra made annual employee volunteer engagement by all employees an annual goal and SanDisk employee participation has continued to increase. SanDisk employees volunteered over 33,000 hours in 2014, and in the last two years, their efforts have raised over $3.5 million through the company’s employee cash donation and volunteer matching program.

In addition, The SanDisk Foundation helps students pursue careers in engineering and computer science through the SanDisk Scholars Program, an annual $1.5 million scholarship program awarding scholarships throughout the United States, Japan and China of up to $10,000 per student, targeting women and typically underrepresented constituencies.
