SAN DIEGO – September 5, 2017 – The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties operates with the mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
San Diego/Imperial Counties Support for Hurricane Harvey & Hurricane Irma Relief Efforts
  • Thousands of experienced American Red Cross volunteers and employees are working around the clock to provide shelter and supplies to Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Harvey.
  • There are currently 21 volunteers from San Diego and Imperial Counties who have deployed to Texas and Louisiana with additional deployments to come in the upcoming days and weeks.
  • A San Diego-based emergency response vehicle (ERV) and two volunteers departed today for Florida to support Red Cross response to Hurricane Irma.
  • Training sessions for new and prospective volunteers were held over the weekend. More than 60 peoplecompleted training to be able to work in Red Cross shelters and may be immediately eligible for deployment to the Gulf Coast in support of Hurricane Harvey relief or to Florida for Hurricane Irma relief efforts. Additional sessions will be announced soon.
  • Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. Financial donations are still needed – visit, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
  • The local Red Cross office is not able to accept in-kind donations at this time. We know Americans are generous and want to do everything they can to help after a disaster. Unfortunately, collecting and sending food, clothing and other household items often does more harm than good. It takes time and money to store, sort, clean and distribute donated items, which diverts limited time and resources away from helping those most affected. In contrast, financial donations can be accessed quickly to support those affected, and be put to use right away.
  • Another option is to help people impacted by the storm through Amazon’s “Wish List” program. Amazon customers can visit to purchase in-kind supplies, like first-aid kits and non-perishable foods to help people in need. Items purchased through Amazon’s Wish List will be sent to a Red Cross warehouse so that the item can be used to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
  • Locally, the Red Cross still maintains normal operations in addition to supporting major disaster relief operations. Throughout August 2017, the following key programs and services were provided throughout the region which covers all of San Diego and Imperial Counties as well as American Samoa:
Disaster Services:
  • Responded to 29 incidents, with 26 of those being home fires
  • Served 48 families including 157 individuals
El Centro Power Outage Response – August 3-4
  • Ten Red Cross volunteers responded to open a shelter in El Centro for residents affected by a power outage. There were no overnight residents in the shelter, however some residents came by during the day to escape the heat until power was restored on the evening of August 4.
Eclipse Fire Response – August 21
  • The Eclipse Fire triggered an evacuation in Campo and Red Cross services were requested for a temporary evacuation point at Mountain Empire High School. Two Red Cross volunteers went out to provide canteen services while shelter and logistics teams were placed on standby. Thanks to favorable weather and swift work from firefighters, the need for a shelter was eliminated when evacuation advisories were lifted.
Service to the Armed Forces:
  • Provided 1,804 services to 863 military members, veterans and spouses.
  • Conducted nine pre-deployment briefings, fulfilling 100% percent of command requests and reaching over 1,300 military families.  Scheduled two resiliency workshops for 23 military family members.
  • Services to the Armed Forces caseworkers conducted family follow-up on 169 emergency cases for the San Diego Region. 
  • Local Red Cross services were supported by volunteers who spent a total of 5,416 hours throughout themonth of August to aid the Red Cross mission.
  • The August 2017 Volunteer of the Month is Jason Misleh. Jason is a Red Cross Youth Club member and summer student volunteer supporting the Volunteer and Youth Services department. Throughout the summer, he guided new volunteers through the application process and worked to recruit new Red Cross Clubs. Jason planned all aspects of the July and August Service Saturday activities bringing dozens of youth to the local Red Cross office to complete necessary projects. Jason is always willing to help where needed and exemplifies the Red Cross spirit. 
Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program:
  • A total of 20,525 women, infants, and children received nutrition counseling and support in August 2017.
  • For more than 40 years, the local Red Cross has administered the WIC program in San Diego County. WIC is a supplemental nutrition assistance program that provides families in the most vulnerable communities with access to nutrition education, breastfeeding support, community resources, and groceries.

Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. – VOLUNTEERS STILL ARE NEEDED
  • Canvassing Day (door-to-door for smoke alarm sign ups) – Saturday, September 23
  • Free Smoke Alarm Installation Day – Saturday, October 7
  • Seven times a day, someone in this country dies in a home fire. Most fires occur in homes that lack working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of death by half.
  • We’re hitting the pavement to Sound the Alarm and install free smoke alarms – 1,000+ alarms inone day on October 7 in Logan Heights.

Real Heroes Awards Breakfast – Friday, September 29
  • A community celebration aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum honoring local individuals and organizations who’ve made a commitment to creating safer, stronger communities and providing help when disaster strikes.
