American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties Kicks Off Annual Shelter of Hope Event on June 1
Local Red Cross CEO to stay in mock disaster shelter to raise funds and awareness for local disaster relief
SAN DIEGO, May 22, 2018 — On Friday, June 1, the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties will kick off the annual Shelter of Hope campaign. Local Red Cross CEO Sean Mahoney will live in a simulated disaster shelter until $500,000 is raised.
Last year, Shelter of Hope raised more than $500,000 for local disaster relief, topping $504,000 on the 15th day. This year, with the help of $250,000 in matching funds to multiply donations that come in throughout the campaign, the local Red Cross hopes to reach the $500,000 fundraising goal in five days.
“Living in the Shelter of Hope without the comforts of home replicates a small portion of what displaced families go through during a disaster,” said Sean Mahoney, CEO of the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties. “Shelter of Hope also demonstrates our commitment to serving our community 24 hours a day. When the Red Cross is needed, our volunteers answer the call.”
Shelter of Hope was developed in San Diego to draw awareness and raise funds toward fulfilling the Red Cross mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies – from wildfires to home fires and so much more. As of mid-May, the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties has already assisted nearly 280 families in more than 130 disasters this year.
“Our Shelter of Hope is special because the funds raised through this event will help support local disaster relief,” said Dave Geier, board chair of the local Red Cross and senior vice president of San Diego Gas & Electric. “We respond to about one disaster every 24 hours and everyone who donates to or visits us at the Shelter of Hope is helping to support neighbors in need.”
Shelter of Hope kicks off on the morning of June 1 at the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties headquarters in Kearny Mesa (3950 Calle Fortunada, San Diego, 92123). Each day has a different location, theme and activities along with the opportunity to learn about disaster preparedness and the mission of the American Red Cross.
New this year, Shelter of Hope will be housed out of a local Red Cross emergency response vehicle, which is used to provide services in the community. In the aftermath of a large-scale disaster, these emergency response vehicles are loaded with relief supplies to be provided to affected families.
